“Hearts for Ukraine” by Lesia Sochor.

Local Color Gallery welcomed back guest artist Lesia Sochor with characteristic Belfast enthusiasm — a full house at last month’s opening during Fourth Friday Art Walk. The response was warm enough that the gallery invited her to return and speak again at this month’s reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24, with Sochor speaking at 5:30 p.m.

Sochor’s “Thimble” series offers a meditation on how hands and hand gestures serve as a universal method of communication across cultures and time. The humble thimble, used since ancient times, becomes both tool and metaphor for protection in her skilled hands. She speaks enthusiastically about her inspiration, process, and work, inviting viewers into the intellectual and emotional landscape behind each piece.

A foundational figure in Waldo County’s artistic community, Sochor co-founded “Artfellows,” Belfast’s first cooperative gallery, in 1980. A graduate of Philadelphia College of Art, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums, universities, libraries, and galleries. Recent venues include the Danforth Art Museum, the Michael Klahr Center at UMA, the Zillman Museum, the Belfast Library, and the Littlefield, Parsonage, and Cove Street galleries.

Meanwhile, the gallery’s 14 year-round artists continue their monthly tradition of hanging fresh work, ensuring that each visit offers new discoveries.

Local Color Gallery is at 135 High St., Belfast. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Learn more at localcolorgallerymaine.com.
