Scarborough Fine Craft Show to Feature Large-Scale Pottery Vessel Demo by Guest Artisan Stephen Procter. Maine Crafts Guild artisans will show their fine craft in wood, metal, fiber, clay, glass and mixed media at Camp Ketcha in Scarborough, September 14 and 15.
In celebration of the Scarborough Fine Craft Show’s 10th season, guest artist Stephen Procter will demonstrate how he builds his monumental vessels on the potter’s wheel. Throwing 25 lbs of clay at a time, he adds layer after layer to achieve up to 5 feet in height. His giant propane torch encourages the clay to firm up quickly. Procter’s studio is based in Brattleboro, Vermont and his background as a professionally-trained musician served him in his early years as a self-guided potter. In Procter’s words, “For me, the shape of a well-turned musical phrase translated easily to the flow and movement of a physical gesture moving through space.”
Artisans will travel from all over the state to exhibit, with many hailing from southern Maine. Area exhibitors include; Lacey Goodrich and Jonathan White (ceramics), Chaya Caron, Lisa Gent, Cathy Heinz, Ken Kantro, Jennifer Nielsen and Avery Pierce (jewelry), Paige Carter (floorcloths), Lisa and Zach Jones (lighting), Chong and Judi Lim (metal wall art) and Gretchen Schaefer (glass mosaics).
Additionally, new Guild member Jamien St. Pierre of Bar Harbor, Maine will show his handmade wooden furniture and lighting fixtures. This is St. Pierre’s first time showing at the Scarborough Fine Craft Show.
The show is presented in partnership with the Maine Crafts Association. Attendees are encouraged to stop by the shared booth and learn more about how the organizations serve Maine artists and makers.
The venue for this juried show, Camp Ketcha, sits on 107 acres of meadows, forests, streams and wetlands offering an inspiring backdrop for the professional, member artisans to showcase their heirloom-quality fine crafts. The property’s trails are open to show patrons for exploration.
