“At the Point”, a watercolor by Hannah Ineson

Two member artists at the Pemaquid Art Gallery discovered painting through drawing. Liliana Thelander of Bristol began her art career with stained glass, but studied drawing to design her own patterns, which led to her discovery of painting. Hannah Ineson of Damariscotta found she had inherited a natural drawing ability from her artist ancestors, a skill she found helpful as she turned to painting in early adulthood.

Liliana Thelander was born and educated in Venezuela, taking her computer science skills into employment in the banking industry, which brought her to the United States. In 2006 she and her family moved to midcoast Maine where she joined the Pemaquid Gallery as a member in 2015. She describes her style as “contemporary realism,” with paintings most often executed in oils, and sometimes acrylics. Thelander’s work is stunning, with subjects that “come to life” on the canvas.

Thelander’s subject matter ranges widely from animals and still life objects to landscapes and more. She has a “natural eye for detail,” and aims to create mood with her emphasis on atmosphere and dramatic use of light. She is inspired to paint moments such as she finds in family life, a trip to the farmer’s market, her children’s toys, vintage bottles and of course Maine scenery.

Liliana Thelander is also represented by Mast Cove Galleries in Kennebunkport, Lincolnville Fine Art Gallery, Landing Gallery in Rockland and Gifts at 136 in Damariscotta. Her work is frequently seen in area shows and galleries and may be seen online at www.lilianathelander.com.

Hannah Ineson also shows her work in many mid-coast Maine shows and galleries, as well as in her home studio, Carriage House Studio Gallery at 45 High St. in Damariscotta. After childhood and college in upstate New York State, she and her young family migrated to Maine in 1972, where she started painting in watercolor with artist friends and teachers. Since then, she, like Thelander, has adopted oil as her chosen medium, although she continues to work in water media as well. She developed a method of using acrylic mixed with gloss medium, applied to canvas with palette knife, producing results similar to her work in oils, and more convenient when painting on location.

Ineson is primarily interested in landscape, but not necessarily based on specific geographic locations. She enjoys painting coastal scenery, especially Maine islands such as Monhegan and Hurricane Island near Vinalhaven. She also teaches watercolor journaling in Florida, during the winter, and has self-published A Guide to Sketch Journaling with Watercolor. In 2019 she presented an online course on the subject with ArtfulGatheringEvents.com. She is a faculty member with Marco Island Center for the Arts in Florida.
