“Morning Shadows” by Michael Gent.

“Reawakening,” a show of works by Michael Gent of Gardiner, is on exhibit at Monkitree. The show opened June 16 with a reception and runs through Aug. 12.

Gent views every painting as a chance to hone techniques and a chance to step into a space and create a story.

“The act of painting or drawing evoked the narrative back-story in my head,” he says. “Like imagining a story then writing it down but more simultaneous — the story is also driven by the lines and shapes as they develop.”

An expression on someone’s face, the movement of storm, even a challenging interior space with complex light and shadow will spur Gent to paint.

On choosing the subject of his paintings, he says, “The subjects are varied as are style and techniques. The thread would appear to be the process of reawakening — searching this way, then that, for the correct path.”

Like many artists, Gent began his art exploration as a young child, first with crayons, then pastels, pen and ink, and most recently, oils. His career led him to express himself mainly through mechanical engineering, metalwork and drafting. During that time, he worked to maintain his drawing skill. In 2014, he began to focus in earnest on regaining his artistic skills. Mastering techniques and color theory are the key to fully expressing himself through his work. Mike considers this body of work a series of studies.

“To work freely in that wonderland I need to have confidence in my subconscious control of the medium, draftsmanship and composition of the painting,” he says.

The show can be seen at Monkitree, 263 Water St., Gardiner, during regular shop hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and by appointment.
