Visit gallery b for a one-night event with 40 new and oh-so-dear works by Hattie Barker, from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7. Toast high summer in Maine while exploring Barker’s three-dimensional assemblages, dioramas and scenes, each their own magical and whimsical world.
Since moving to Maine in 1985, Barker has been a beloved and constant creator of many varied things of beauty and charm. Barker is known for creating all manner of deeply-felt and wonderfully-crafted creatures, figures, paintings, collages, clothing, dioramas, and also her famous street-level mice and rat dioramas that change with the seasons and current events in Alexandria, Virginia.
Her newest works feature mice and sometimes owls in painted, sculpted and sewn mise-en-scenes, sometimes referencing other painters and paintings including Braque, Matisse, Lopi Williams, Phoebe Markle and, most recently, her friend and local painter Bill Irvine. Barker also includes nods to her family and everyday life on a small scale that are best enjoyed in person.
A curated selection will remain after the show.
