Ogunquit Art Association will host its 70th annual Art Auction and preview at Barn Gallery

This Ogunquit Art Association (OAA) tradition is the biggest annual art auction in Ogunquit and one of the major cultural events of the summer, and 2024 marks the 70th year of this tradition.

The 70th OAA Art Auction will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 3, with doors opening at 6 p.m. at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit.

The auction will be led by auctioneer William J. Milliken, co-owner of Barridoff Galleries in South Portland and president of the Maine Auctioneer Association. He will preside over the bidding process for a diverse collection of artworks including paintings, graphics, photographs and sculptures by members of the Ogunquit Art Association — Maine’s Original Artists’ Group (est. 1928).

The OAA Art Auction Preview will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 31 to Aug. 2 and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 3. Preview the work, pick an artist-designed bid card, and leave a silent bid.

Participating OAA artists, many with national and international reputations, have created original bid cards on sale at the gallery for $30. A bid card purchase includes auction admission, catalog and refreshments. Plain bid cards for admission are available for $10.

Some event parking is available in the Barn Gallery parking lot. Auction attendees are encouraged to carpool or park in the Obed’s Lane parking lot behind the Dunaway Center. It is a short trolley ride or a pleasant 10-minute walk from there to the gallery.

• Aug. 17 (4 to 7:30 p.m.): “Gala Reception for Late Summer Exhibitions”

• Aug. 20 (6 p.m.): “Mixed Media Workshop: Bands of Color in Watercolor and Collage by Ethel Hills” (Suggested donation $60)

• Aug. 22 (6 p.m.): “Gallery Talk” with showcase artists Shiao-Ping Wang (painter) and Shaune McCarthy (painter).

Although there is no substitution for seeing art in person, virtual versions of the exhibitions are available at barngallery.org.

Barn Gallery’s 2024 season will run through Oct. 14.
