The Friends of the Maine Coastal Islands Wildlife Refuge is showing two exhibitions from June 14 to Aug. 2. An opening reception was held on June 14.

“The Loaded Brush: Watercolors by Timothy James Standring”

Over the past few years, Timothy James Standring has painted watercolors in and around Knox County. Work in this exhibition features his preference for working with a paint-loaded brush, resulting in heavily pigmented marks and images with a poetic sensibility.

Standring’s works are held in numerous private collections across North American and Europe, and he is represented in Denver by Gallery 1261 and in Edwards, Colorado by Claggett-Rey Gallery.

“The Nature of Pastels: The Pastel Society of Maine”

The Pastel Society of Maine (PSME) promotes awareness of the art of soft pastels and provides a network for regional and international pastel artists. Members were invited to submit paintings for an exhibition at the FOMCI gallery, and 40 were chosen for the show.

“The Nature of Pastels” utilizes the unique features of pastel painting to explore the natural world. Paintings feature the Maine coast and the flora and fauna living there.

Friends of Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge is located at 9 Water St., Rockland.
