Sidle House Gallery in Freeport opens its 2026 season with “Anne Hebebrand: A World That Is,” a solo exhibition of cold-wax and oil paintings on view May 1 through June 13. An opening reception is May 1 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The exhibition draws from seven years of Hebebrand’s work, which she describes as “rooted in an intuitive process driven by a lifelong love of abstraction. These paintings serve as maps of memory, where colors and shapes evolve organically to create their own universe. Using oil and cold wax, I build, scrape, and rework the surface — layering and excavating until the moment arrives when the piece reveals its own history and depth.”
In his essay “Anne Hebebrand’s Serious Whimsy,” the introduction to her new exhibition catalog, Dr. Aaron Rosen writes that her paintings “manage to be at turns whimsical, curious, and enchanting. And, at the same time, incontrovertibly serious. Hebebrand’s works disclose — and for at least a moment, encourage us to dwell within — the delight of the world. Far from being escapist, they nudge us back into the world, reminding us to seek out moments of wonder and delight, even in unlikely places and moments.”
Hebebrand’s work explores memory, perception and abstraction through a nuanced play of light, form and color. She has exhibited widely in the United States and Mexico, and her work has been featured in Art New England, the Hartford Courant, Zest Maine, Journal del Pacifico and the New York Times. She has taught at Manchester Community College, Albertus Magnus College and the Wadsworth Atheneum, and holds a BFA from the Boston Museum School/Tufts University and an MA from the University of Alabama.
Related events include a featured artist talk on May 3 at 2 p.m., a cold wax and oil workshop with the artist May 30 through 31, and a solo violin with electronics performance by Katherine Liccardo on June 7.
Sidle House Gallery is at 20 Bartol Island Road in Freeport. Hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and by appointment May 1 through June 13. For more information, email maddy@sidlehouse.com.
