Work by Sarah Faragher.

Landing Gallery in Rockland opens “Fire and Ice,” new paintings by Sarah Faragher, today, June 5, with an opening reception during the First Friday Art Walk from 4 to 8 p.m. The show runs through June 28.

Faragher, a midcoast Maine painter known for her deep engagement with the coastal landscape, draws on both direct observation and imagination in the new work. Painting at the edge of the sea among glacial residue and ancient rock, she explores the dualities of fire and ice, warmth and cold, dark and radiant — qualities she sees not as opposites but as one. “Suns turn into moons and bright moons resemble dark suns,” Faragher said. “These apparent dualities are one to me, and hold darkness and radiance simultaneously.”

The title takes its cue from Robert Frost’s poem. “The world is still beautiful while it burns and freezes,” Faragher said. “I pay attention, align myself with what is, and move some paint around in response.”

Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. Landing Gallery is at 409 Main St., Rockland. Call 207-239-1223, email landinggallery@gmail.com or follow the gallery on Facebook at facebook.com/LandingGallery for more information.
