Castine’s gallery b. continues its summer programming in partnership with the Annex Arts Artist Residency Program, combining exhibitions at the Main Street gallery with visiting-artist events at the Annex Arts studios on Water Street.
Annex Arts hosted a July 29 open studio with artist-in-residence Hilary Irons, a Maine-based painter and curator whose work explores opticality, landscape and material culture. Her paintings examine how color, mark and light shape perceptions of space and objects.
Irons received an MFA from the Yale School of Art and a BFA from Parsons School of Design. Her residencies have included the Albers Foundation, Skowhegan, MacDowell, the American Academy in Rome, the Pace House, Hewnoaks, Canterbury Shaker Village and the Surf Point Foundation.
She has written for The Chart, Art New England, Boston Art Review and other publications. Irons is gallery and exhibitions director at the University of New England and is represented by Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York City.
The gallery recently presented “Outside / Inside,” an exhibition bringing together interiors, exteriors, flowers, still lifes, vistas and architecture. The show, which included Patty B Driscoll’s “Pride of Barbados,” remained on view through Aug. 3.
Next, “Figure & Ground” will open Aug. 8 at gallery b., followed by the limited-edition expansion “Figure & Ground Expanded” from Aug. 12 to 15.
