In Castine, gallery b. presented “Figure & Ground,” an exhibition bringing together old and new works, abstraction and figuration, and pieces from the estates of mid-20th-century artists with contemporary artworks that resonate with them.
The exhibition explored the artistic relationship between figure and ground — the interplay between a subject and its background, positive and negative space, and abstraction and representation.
Featured artists included Leni Mancuso, Thomas Barrett, Sandys Moore, Hannah Burr, Nancy Gruskin, Megan Magill, Wendy Fullenweider, Cathleen Daley, Sara MacCulloch, Ellie Barnet, Tim Christensen, Louise Bourne, Mara Korkola and Charleen Wiseman.
An opening reception was held Aug. 10 at gallery b. and Annex Arts. In conjunction with the Downeast Art & Antiques Show, an expanded version of “Figure & Ground” was presented at Annex Arts from Aug. 12 to 15.
