Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth presents “My Maine: A Retrospective,” the first retrospective of Maine painter Philip Barter since his death in 2024, through Sept. 10.
The exhibition surveys Barter’s distinctive approach to the Maine landscape, including his stylized renderings of trees, rivers, mountains, clouds and the sea.
In the 2017 monograph “Philip Barter: Forever Maine,” author Carl Little described Barter’s ability to distill the landscape into its essential forms, from the geometry of mountain peaks and curving snowfields to woodland streams and shifting ocean swells. Barter’s bold palette and simplified forms became hallmarks of his work.
A Sept. 2 gallery talk featured Barter’s wife, Priscilla Barter, and son, Matt Barter, who discussed life with the painter and the family cottage industry that helped launch his career. Barter went on to become one of Maine’s most widely recognized painters.
Born in 1939, Barter began exhibiting in the 1960s and developed a deeply personal visual language rooted in the landscape and communities of Maine. He died in 2024 at age 84.
