Shaw Jewelry in Northeast Harbor presents four exhibitions featuring work by Susan Hamilton Meier, Jessica Ives, Timothy Stammen and Michael Torlen through Oct. 30.
SUSAN HAMILTON MEIER
In “Wild Beauty,” Susan Hamilton Meier draws on the visual language of ancient cultures to explore textures, forms and materials that channel the radiance of sunlight.
Of particular note are her black jet stones inlaid with diamonds and precious gems. The dark, lustrous material absorbs light while the gems radiate against it. Each hand-forged piece creates tension between light and dark, organic and refined and elemental and unexpected.
JESSICA IVES
Jessica Ives explores the relationship between the human body, water and light in “Lustral Luster: Water Play.”
Her fascination with how bodies interact with water informs paintings in which both people and water become containers for light. As light passes through water, it bends, breaks and sparkles, creating abstractions of the immersed human form. Ives’ study of anatomy further informs the inherent abstractions in her paintings.
TIMOTHY STAMMEN
Jeweler Timothy Stammen presents “Contains Light From Above,” featuring statement pieces fashioned from gems, gold and platinum.
Originally from Camden, Stammen worked at Tiffany & Co. and with jewelry artist and goldsmith Zoltan David. An avid fly fisherman, Stammen traces his interest in the intricate scale of jewelry in part to tying his own flies as a child.
MICHAEL TORLEN
Michael Torlen draws on family history and his own experiences at sea in “Men Working the Sea.”
Torlen’s father was a Norwegian immigrant and commercial tuna fisherman in San Diego, California. Torlen worked alongside his father and experienced firsthand the hardships and dangers of life on the ocean.
His monoprints, watercolors and prints use color and maritime imagery to explore that experience and the generations of labor represented by men working at sea.
