COURTHOUSE Keen FlatRock Surry x in
Richard Keen, “Flat Rock No. 10: Surry.”

Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth will host an artists’ talk with Heidi Daub and Richard Keen at 11 a.m. Sept. 26. The artists will discuss their work in “A Shared Horizon,” a two-person exhibition on view through Oct. 17.

Daub and Keen will explore what happens when the landscape becomes something else, considering how perceptions of the natural world can be translated, distilled and transformed through mark-making. They will reflect on process, color and the influence of geometry and poetry in relation to patterns and fractals found in nature and their paintings.

The event is free and open to the public.

A SHARED HORIZON

The exhibition explores unexpected connections between the work of Daub and Keen, two Maine artists whose styles are complementary yet markedly different: geometric and bold on one hand, organic and softly layered on the other.

Both artists share a fascination with patterns and fractals and a deep passion for the natural world, evident in paintings such as Keen’s “Night Trees” and Daub’s “She Comes From Sun.” Richly saturated and dreamlike, their imaginative landscapes offer glimpses into a realm where the patterns of nature mysteriously converge.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Daub was raised in upstate New York near the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers and graduated from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. Along with presenting group and solo exhibitions and public readings, she has produced two compilations of her paintings and poems: “Eve Of A New Round” in 2008 and the artist catalog “Pieces of Prayer” in 2015.

As a curator and collaborator, Daub was a guest exhibitor and reader at the Belfast Maine Poetry Festival in 2005 and 2013 and the Maine Word. Festival in 2017 and 2018. Her work was included in the Maine publications “A Dangerous New World: Maine Voices On The Climate Crisis” and “Voices From The Coast: Maine Coast Heritage Trust Celebrating 50 Years,” published in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Daub was the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Alcyon Center in 2018. She maintains a studio in Blue Hill, and her paintings are held in private and corporate collections internationally.

Keen is a Maine-based artist whose abstract work explores the relationship between place and perception through bold color, geometric forms and the intersection of natural and built environments. Coastal landscapes and his years working as a commercial diver deeply influence his artistic vision.

Originally from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Keen earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Millikin University and a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany. His work is held in public and private collections nationally and internationally and has appeared in the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program.

Keen has received grants from the Maine Arts Commission, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and Rhode Island Sea Grant. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at the Midwest Museum of American Art, Garage Art Center in Queens and Zillman Art Museum in Bangor. He lives and maintains a studio in Surry.
