Local Color Gallery in Belfast will feature guest artist Jan Owen from Sept. 21 to Oct. 18 and welcome Amy Nichols as a new year-round artist.
Both artists will discuss their work during an Art Walk reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 25. The talks will begin at 5 p.m.
The gallery will also hold its first gallery-wide sale in appreciation of its supporters, the Belfast community and art lovers. All artwork except work by guest artist Owen will be discounted 10% from Sept. 22 to Oct. 18.
Owen is a Belfast calligraphic book artist whose work combines words by writers and poets around themes including language, music, digital code and law.
Owen collects “beautiful and important words,” writing them with a dip pen in the tradition of scribes. She selects writers from different eras to create dialogues across time. Using pens, brushes, ink, acrylics and handmade and decorated papers, she creates artist books.
Owen has worked as an artist-in-residence and book artist and has played bass with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. Her honors include two Maine Arts Commission artist fellowships and Percent for Art projects. She exhibits internationally, and her artist books are held by museums and private and special-collection libraries.
Nichols, also of Belfast, was a Local Color Gallery guest artist in June. Her art quilts brought bright color to the gallery walls and generated an enthusiastic response.
Her quilts grew from a lifelong love of color, shape, design and texture. One of her earliest influences was exploring the colorful fabrics and textiles in the bazaars of Kabul, Afghanistan, as a child. Teaching art and design principles to elementary school students also influenced her work.
Nichols studied artists including Piet Mondrian, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky, whose work inspired her to create art quilts. She is fascinated by the possibilities for playful, intuitive expression through fabrics and textiles and follows her curiosity to explore each new “What if?”
