“Made in Maine,” the Maine Art Gallery’s annual member show, features more than 100 works of art across two floors of the historic Old Academy building in Wiscasset. The exhibition is on view through Oct. 18.

Sara Stites of Thomaston, a new member, is showing at the gallery for the first time. Her oil painting “Summer Plans,” featuring the figure of a jester, offers a wry take on Mainers’ attempts to plan their summers.

“Doesn’t everyone in Maine plan ahead for summer, just to find life, family, and friends have their own sense of your ideal schedule? Like a jester, they just smile when you try to stick to your own schedule,” Stites said.

Bath artist Martha Baum shared the story behind her painting “Quick Dip.”

“I always loved a photo I took years back of these robust Polar Bear swimmers running out of the water after their dip in the frigid water at Portland’s annual New Year’s Day Lobster Dip,” Baum said. “This year, January 1 was a very frigid day, and I decided to make it a painting.”

The member show also includes work by artists from the Maine Art Gallery’s early years. Among the pieces is an oil painting by F. Wenderoth Saunders depicting the gallery building for the organization’s 25th anniversary.

Beside it is “La Maja,” a granite bust by Geraldine Mayer Smith, an early gallery member and the mother of current volunteer Alice Smith Duncan. Saunders and Smith were longtime friends, and Saunders gave Smith the painting in 1982. Smith’s descendants, Duncan and her brother, Rufus Smith, have donated the painting to the gallery.

The gallery will celebrate recent improvements to its building at 4 p.m. Sept. 19. Additions include new handrails on the staircase and a large installation chronicling the gallery’s history through a timeline and photographs of artists whose work has appeared there.

Les Fossel, a longtime gallery supporter and head of Restoration Resources, will discuss the improvements and upcoming building projects, including a renovation of the cupola.

The gallery thanked season sponsor Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty and capital sponsor Ames True Value Hardware for their support.
