NEW BOARD PRESIDENT

Lights Out has named Ian Trask president of its board of directors. A multimedia sculptor and installation artist, Trask draws materials from surrounding waste streams, reflecting on society’s attitudes toward material things and their effects on communities and the environment.

Originally from Massachusetts, Trask earned a biology degree from Bowdoin College in 2005. After working in scientific research, he turned to visual art, spending eight years building his practice in New York City before returning to Maine in 2015. He lives in Topsham and works in Brunswick’s Fort Andross mill building.

“I truly feel that Lights Out is playing a critical role in organizing and strengthening community bonds within our state, which is of pivotal importance in today’s fractured society,” Trask wrote in a letter announcing his new role.

FESTIVAL AWARDS AND STUDIO INCUBATOR

Norway Art Festival award recipients are Brian Buckland for best in show, judged by Kat Zagaria Buckley; Erin Johnson for best booth setup, judged by Maddy Vertenten; Josie Colt for best demonstration, judged by Diana Arcadipone; and Heidi Littlefield for the People’s Choice Award.

Buckland makes wood-fired utilitarian ceramics using locally collected materials, including gemstones, beach sand, marine clay and seashells. Johnson creates ceramic faces with individual personalities. Colt uses pen and watercolor for live portraits in the spirit of blind contour drawing, while Littlefield makes and dresses mice.

Lights Out also highlighted Sally Wagley, one of 11 artists in this summer’s Studio Incubator program. A Brunswick artist working in drawing, collage, assemblage, embroidery and printmaking, Wagley explores narratives from mythology, religion and popular culture, as well as language and writing. During her residency, she created monotypes examining language, pattern, circles and spheres, and clothing in relation to the body and gender. The program receives support from the Maine Arts Commission, the Onion Foundation and individual donors.
