The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland is celebrating the opening of its Arts@theIntersection Student Exhibition today, June 5, with a free community event from 5 to 7 p.m. as part of First Fridays at the Farnsworth. The exhibition will remain on view through spring 2027.
The show features work by four classrooms across four Maine school districts, representing a year-long collaboration among students, museum staff, artists, educators and community partners. The evening includes free admission, student artwork in the Craig Gallery, artmaking and games in the Sculpture Garden, refreshments and a short film about the program in the museum’s auditorium. A preview for students, teachers and participants begins at 4 p.m.
Arts@theIntersection is a year-round, student-led arts integration program engaging students in grades 5 through 12 through workshops, collaborative projects and partnerships with local artists and community organizations. Among the works on view: fifth graders at St. George School created a three-dimensional botanical installation, each student crafting a plant sculpture representing their identity from biodegradable and locally sourced materials; seventh graders at Nobleboro Central School explored portraiture and photography, producing layered diptychs on paper and silk; ninth and tenth graders at Brewer High School built a collaborative room-by-room dollhouse installation exploring memory, identity and lived experience; and 11th and 12th graders at Oceanside High School created a large-scale wall installation with an original digital film exploring how people relate — and fail to relate — to global events.
“In 2025, nearly 7,000 students participated in free educational programming at the Farnsworth, and since 2012, we have invested more than $3.5 million in educational initiatives,” said Chris Brownawell, director of the Farnsworth Art Museum.
Farnsworth Art Museum is at 16 Museum St., Rockland. Call 207-596-6457 or visit farnsworthmuseum.org for more information.
