Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth is presenting three exhibitions featuring Philip Barter, Gregory Dunham, Heidi Daub and Richard Keen.
“My Maine” is the first retrospective of Maine painter Philip Barter since his death in 2024. Known for his stylized renderings of trees, rivers, mountains and clouds, Barter developed a distinctive visual language through bold color and simplified forms drawn from the Maine landscape.
In the monograph “Philip Barter: Forever Maine,” author Carl Little described Barter’s ability to find the essential geometry of the landscape, from mountain peaks and woodland streams to snowfields and the movement of the sea.
Barter’s wife, Priscilla, and son, Matt, will give a gallery talk at 5 p.m. Sept. 2 about the family’s role in helping Barter launch his career and the unique life Barter and his wife created for their large family.
Gregory Dunham’s “The Fading Tide” chronicles the gradual disappearance of a traditional way of life along the Maine coast through detailed watercolor paintings. Weathered clam shacks, abandoned smokehouses and water-worn skiffs become subjects for Dunham, who renders the aging structures in muted earth tones, blues and grays.
“A Shared Horizon” brings together work by Maine artists Heidi Daub and Richard Keen, whose distinct approaches find common ground in their interest in patterns, fractals and the natural world. Keen’s work is geometric and bold, while Daub’s is more organic and softly layered. Their richly saturated, dreamlike landscapes explore places where patterns in nature converge.
An opening reception for the exhibitions was held Aug. 19.
Courthouse Gallery is at 6 Court St., Ellsworth. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 207-667-6611 or go to courthousegallery.com.
