Monson Jerry Stelmok Poster online

Monson Arts Gallery in Monson will open “Wood, Wildlife & Whimsy: The Art of Canoe Maker Jerry Stelmok — A Retrospective” with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. The exhibition will remain on view through March 29, 2027.

The show celebrates more than five decades of work by Stelmok, a canoe maker, author, illustrator and painter. Since 1975, he has handcrafted canoes at his Island Falls Canoe shop in Atkinson. Over the years, he and his team have built and restored more than 1,000 wooden canoes.

Since 2008, Stelmok and fellow canoe maker Rollin Thurlow have been the sole producers of traditional handmade wood-canvas canoes for the Old Town Canoe Company.

Stelmok has also authored and illustrated eight books and created paintings informed by his love of nature and a sense of whimsy. The retrospective brings together canoes, illustrations and paintings from across his career, highlighting the overlap between traditional craftsmanship and the visual arts.
