Please join us for our August 7th Opening!
The third show of the 2016 and 34th season at the Turtle Gallery will feature: Janis Goodman (Oil Paintings)
Vaino Kola (Oil Paintings & Etchings)
Adele Ursone (Oil Paintings & Watercolor Studies)
The show begins with an Opening Reception Sunday, August 7 from 2 to 6 PM and runs through Saturday, August 27th. Other Gallery artists, a vast collection of Jewelry and Contemporary Craft, the Annual Print Show and Sculpture Garden will also be on display. Light refreshments will be served.

Full of skillful exuberance, Janis Goodman’s collection of oil paintings take the viewer into a space of motion and shifting lines. Goodman’s work gestures toward her study of the eastern landscapes while traveling in Asia, which “nurtured the calligraphic line and movement” of her work. In each piece the viewer can experience commotion coupled with stability, all thoughtfully anchored in a whimsical composition.

Finland Native and Deer Isle resident Vaino Kola will have etchings and new works in Oil on display. Kola moved to Maine to paint full-time after teaching art at Wheaton College in Massachusetts for 26 years. Kola’s paintings, often monumental in scale, appear almost photo-realistic from a distance, but closer inspection reveals deeply textured, almost pointillist brushwork. He has mastered the art of creating a moment; the stillness after a heavy snowfall, the ripple of an incoming tide or the fluttering of leaves.

Often subtle and serene, Adele Ursone’s landscape paintings are equally engaging as they are transformative. Working from observations in the detail of her environment she creates spaces where “edges become so blurred, reality dissolves into abstraction.” While a New York City resident part of the year, Ursone’s visual narratives speak strongly of her annual time spent on the water and the Maine Coast.

Open since 1982, The Turtle Gallery encompasses an 1876 two-story barn, the adjacent Centennial House Gallery and outdoor Sculpture Gardens. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 – 5:30 and Sunday 2 to 6.
The facility is located at 61 N. Deer Isle Road on Route 15, just north of the Deer Isle village center. For more information, please call 348-9977, or visit TheTurtleGallery.com. We are on Facebook and Instagram under @TheTurtleGallery.
