Hey Sailor! and Trove presented “May Day May Day” on May 1, showcasing the work of Stockton Springs artist Frederick Kuhn at Hey Sailor!, 25 E. Main St., Searsport.

Kuhn is a contemporary artist whose use of color and design creates delightful art that is joyful and unexpected.

The five works featured in the event range from 1995 to 2021 and show an evolving yet consistent interest in form and color over his artistic career. In the two end paintings, from the Savoy series, he eliminates a focal point by creating overall patterns and saturated complementary colors, which, when juxtaposed, cause an optical effect. The three middle works, from the NONSTOP series, emphasize the unbroken flow of line as a fluid movement without beginning or end.

Trove, 36 E. Main St., Searsport, highlighted its stable of current and new artists and craftspeople, including Rachel Siviski, Shannon Westphal, Willy Reddick, BentMetal (Erica Schlueter) and Peter Walls, among many other notable Maine artisans.

Laura Brown opened Trove in 2021 with her curated collection and is looking forward to sharing it as she begins her second season of Trove.
