Honorees are Marcia and Daniel Minter of Indigo Arts Alliance and Karen Brace.
Daniel and Marcia Minter are pioneers in Maine’s contemporary art scene. Their dream of creating a center where artists of color would be nurtured, celebrated, and inspired has come to pass in their creation of Indigo Arts Alliance based in Portland and operating with a global mission. CMCA and Indigo Arts Alliance have a history of collaboration and shared interests. As a nationally acclaimed artist, Daniel’s own work deals with themes of displacement and diaspora, ordinary/extraordinary blackness in the Afro-Atlantic world. As a multi-disciplinary visual artist, Daniel is a painter who also creates in assemblage, blending bas relief carving and painting with found objects. Marcia Minter is an arts advocate and community leader who expertly blends creativity with business acumen. Marcia’s work represents the interests of underrepresented voices, talents, and citizen constituents. A community curator, her work centers Black and Brown professionals creating at the intersection of art and cultural scholarship.
Karen Brace has been a driving force at CMCA for more than a decade. During her ten years as a trustee, she served as board chair from 2016 to 2019, a critical period in the life of the organization. Brace’s operational leadership and generous support made possible the transition to CMCA’s new venue in Rockland and its resulting rapid expansion. That support is reflected in the naming of the Karen and Rob Brace Hall. Brace spearheaded many efforts to engage supporters from the Mid-Coast area and beyond. Her dedication and passion fostered the museum’s growth and its increasing recognition in Maine’s contemporary art community.
