Saltpond Blueberry Field
“Saltpond Blueberry Field #8” by Paul Trowbridge.

Paul Trowbridge, a local artist, created a series of paintings as a form of protest against a proposed subdivision on the Salt Pond Blueberry Barrens. The spot is cherished by the Mikmaw people, often painted, and an important landscape of natural Maine flora and fauna.

The developer planned to build nine mansions on 30-plus acres of land. In response, Trowbridge decided to create nine paintings — one for each proposed lot — to highlight the beauty of the land that was at risk.

The Blueberry Barrens series is part of the Turtle Gallery’s final show of the season, “Trees 3.0.” The exhibition features artist books by Rebecca Goodale, prints and paintings by Holly Berry, Barbara Putnam, Sheep Jones, Paul Trowbridge, Elena Kubler, Nicole Herz, Vaino Kola, and mixed-media work by Conny Hatch, Michèle Ratté, Lynn Duryea and Sharon Townshend.

The show will be on display until Oct. 12.

The Turtle Gallery is located at 61 N. Deer Isle Road in Deer Isle. For more information, visit theturtlegallery.com, or call 207-348-9977.
