Meetinghouse Arts Gallery is proud to present “Capturing Light,” an exhibition of works by these artists offering unique perspectives on the mesmerizing light and landscapes of coastal Maine. The show runs from November 7th through November 16th, 2025, at the gallery’s downtown Freeport location. Six Maine Painters, Liz Prescott (acrylics), Björn Runquist (oils), Margaret Creighton (mixed media), Molly Mugler (watercolors, acrylics and mixed media), Art Schaefer (oils) and Karin Strong (oils) will feature their interpretations of our beautiful state. They all live in coastal Maine but have painted together in such wide-ranging areas as northern New Mexico, North Haven and Monhegan Islands and have often expressed a desire to show together.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 7th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The public is invited to meet the artists, view their work, and enjoy light refreshments in the welcoming atmosphere of Meetinghouse Arts Gallery.

“Capturing Light” brings together six distinguished artists who work in a range of media, united by their fascination with the interplay of light and landscape along Maine’s storied coastline. From luminous oil paintings to expressive watercolors and mixed media, the exhibition celebrates the ever-changing moods and colors that define the region’s natural beauty.

Liz Prescott draws inspiration from the reflections of the boats and buildings along the working waterfront and rocky shoreline. These motifs allow her to straddle the line between abstraction and representation, balancing intuitive play with formal concerns like shape, space and color interaction.

Björn Runquist paints in the “American luminist tradition, the European plein air school and his modern sensibility merge into a very personal style.  A certain air of romanticism permeates his work reinforced by a wonderful feeling for light and color. ” Quote by Will Barnet, New York.

Margaret Creighton, whose Maine seascapes have been described as “poetic,” seeks to distill busy and complicated images into simple, light-filled scenes that are evocative and atmospheric.

Molly Mugler is drawn to the unique scenes of coastal Maine, particularly transitions of light and shadow and negative space. Her expressive use of line, value shifts, and color celebrate the beauty of the ordinary.

Art Schaefer a versatile painter, captures Maine in its subtlety and blazing glory — from countryside to oceanside to flora and fauna.

Karin Strong’s process has been plein air painting mixed with studio time. She has found that painting in oils is like painting with jewels and the vivid colors and textures feeds her soul.

These six painters have deep ties to Maine’s creative community and are inspirated from dawn mist, bold sunsets and sunrises, and the silvery reflections of the Atlantic. Visitors will experience a diverse array of styles, from realism to abstraction, all centered around the theme of light’s impact on water, land, and sky.

Through mutual admiration of each other’s styles and a sense of adventure, the six artists have painted together from time to time ever since their trip to New Mexico, offering critiques and helping each other out with composition, style and content. They have stayed in contact and enjoy what each other brings to the table in paintings and personality, and now they finally have the exhibit they talked about for years.
