Tracy Van Buskirk, a relief print artist, will be in residence at the Deer Isle Artists Association for the month of February, focusing on the art of collage.
Van Buskirk has worked in linoleum block printmaking for a few years and is excited to switch gears and work in the world of cut and torn paper. Block printing requires planning and meticulous execution while creating compositions in collage is more spontaneous and introduces many new variables. She is keeping open the possibility of combining collage with printmaking for some unique pieces.
Her residency coincides with an Instagram challenge called “Februllage” (#februllage2026). During the month of February, online participants are given daily prompts to inspire a collage each day. Van Buskirk will use this as a jumping off place. Her collage materials will include sources such as library catalogue cards, architectural drawings and even some letters and drawings from the Deer Isle Granite Company.
She is looking forward to having the gallery’s large space to set up several tables and spread out her materials and not have to put them away every day.
The gallery will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. or whenever the open flag is out. Please stop in to say hi, see what Buskirk is up to or even bring some interesting papers for her to use!
Van Buskirk will host a community workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 14. Participants of all ages are welcome to attend. She will provide each person with a board, scissors, glue and materials to create their own collage. Van Buskirk will guide them in considering shape, color and composition as they build their own piece of art to take home. It will be a messy and fun afternoon. Please RSVP to kriksubnav@hotmail.com by Feb. 11.
There will be a closing reception and artist’s talk from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 28 at the gallery. Van Buskirk will discuss her experience and growth during the month and share her completed works.
