John Wood

Wood passed away in 2025 after a brief illness. Born Jan. 5, 1943, in Corvallis, Oregon, he earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and physical education from the University of Oregon, followed by two master of fine arts degrees in theater — one from Oregon State University and one from Temple University. He pursued a career in acting, appearing in commercials, soap operas and theater productions, and was also a talented singer who performed in nightclubs and, in later years, with the DownEast Singers in Maine.

In 2000, Wood visited Maine for an art workshop and fell in love with the Midcoast. He and his husband, Kelly, made it their home in 2008, spending their years there gardening and restoring their house. Over time Wood became a gifted painter in both watercolor and oil, and his work is widely collected.

Art Space Gallery, a fine art cooperative owned and operated by Maine artists, is at 405 Main St., Rockland. See artspacemaine.com for details.
