Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth presents an opening reception Wednesday July 22, from 5 to 7, for “William Irvine: Heading Home,” and  “Ragna Bruno: Boundless.”

William Irvine: Heading Home At ninety-five William Irvine continues to surprise viewers with something new like the tender embrace of Lovers by the Sea (30 x 40 inches), The Rough Sea (30 x 40), and the glorious, sun-soaked yellow of Heading Home (36 x 72 inches), his last large painting in this series.

In his essay for the catalog, arts writer Jorge Arango, who admires Irvine’s work, declares, “No one on the planet does anything like Irvine does. This uniqueness of vision, and the persistence and prolific nature of its development are astonishing.”

Ragna Bruno: Boundless celebrates Ragna Bruno (1935–2026) and the final twenty-three oil paintings she created before her passing in April 2026. Painted on Japanese paper in the peaceful solitude of her studio, these works invite viewers into a poetic, open-ended, meditative experience.

In her 2019 exhibition catalog, arts writer Daniel Kany summed up why Bruno’s paintings resonate with collectors:
“It’s where she can incorporate what matters to her—memories, experiences, love; however bittersweet—and present her vision as an affirming exaltation of life. The solitude of her painting is quiet, beautiful and free.”
