The Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset presents “Plein Air: Paint It Maine!” and “The Art of Alchemy: Collage/Mixed Media Exploration,” two exhibitions on view through Sept. 6.

For this year’s annual plein-air event, the gallery encouraged the 18 participating artists to spend time painting at nature preserves maintained by Midcoast Conservancy, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The preserves include land where Maine Art Gallery legacy artist Joseph Fiore cleared brush, maintained trails and painted the surrounding vistas. Several of Fiore’s paintings are on loan to the gallery and displayed alongside newly completed works by contemporary artists.

A panel discussion, “Why We Like Painting Plein Air,” will be held at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 13.

Running concurrently on the gallery’s second floor, “The Art of Alchemy” explores the possibilities of collage and mixed media. The juried exhibition features works combining materials and methods including paper, paint, photography, fabric, ephemera and assemblage.

The Maine Art Gallery thanks Barnes Custom Window Treatments for sponsoring “Plein Air: Paint It Maine!” and J. Edward Knight Insurance for sponsoring “The Art of Alchemy.”
