The Tree That Became Everything August 15 – September 12
This Temporary Space in Thomaston is pleased to present The Tree That Became Everything, a two-person exhibition featuring Sophie Anna Gibbings and Wills Phillips. A public opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 15, from 3-6pm.
Does a tree persist long after it leaves the forest? Does it hold memory, does it mark time, and does it change as it becomes shelter, structure, paper, and ash? Does it carry traces of where it began while taking on new forms?
The Tree That Became Everything brings together the work of Sophie Anna Gibbings and Wills Phillips, two artists whose practices begin with different relationships to the tree. Rather than simply representing nature, they work through it. For Gibbings, natural processes of growth, change, and impermanence become collaborators. For Phillips, wood becomes a language for exploring the body, vulnerability, and transformation. Each follows a different path, yet both remain connected to the tree’s original form.
This exhibition is an invitation to consider the lives that continue within a material. The tree is never lost. It just keeps becoming, reminding us that what emerges is not separate from what came before, but perhaps another chapter in their ongoing life.
