View Jean Kigel’s new paintings at the mid-century modern Brick House Gallery, 176 Winslow Mills Road, Waldoboro from August 12th to 14th. Reception Friday August 12th from 5-7.
Now in its 18th season, Jean Kigel’s Annual Eastern Views combines motifs from Asian and Maine. This year she presents an unexpectedly broader vision, depicted in a style she calls geometric-realism. These paintings include slices of the sea and land. Featured this year isThoroughfare in which light, in the sky and on the water, forms polyhedric shapes, providing a sailboat passage offshore.
Currently Kigel’s studio practice revolves around a whimsical series of attic windows from Rockland, Warren, and Waldoboro. In these, roof peaks dance in colorful shapes against the sky. “I look for interesting shapes to give feeling to the painting. Then I work with the color to create harmony and mood.”
As usual, this show also presents a blend of more realistic paintings using watercolor and Asian brush techniques. “Flowers are favorites. And almost any subject, from kitchen artifacts to insects, captures my attention. Applying Asian brush, Kigel brings a sense of “exotica” to the familiar.
