Photographer Jack Montgomery shared a portfolio of about 50 photogravure and palladium prints during a July 25 artist residency at the Maine Museum of Photographic Arts in Portland. Many of the works depict sites near his home in Freeport.
Montgomery began photographing in earnest in 1992, focusing largely on portraiture while also exploring landscapes and other genres. He has worked with film and digital cameras, but for the past decade has primarily made prints using 19th-century processes, including photogravure, palladium and kallitype.
“These methods are slow, often challenging and full of surprises,” Montgomery wrote. “I get pleasure making things by hand. Each one of these prints is unique.”
Montgomery said working in this fashion allows him to introduce his own memories, dreams and reflections into an image.
“They each tell a story — at least they do for me,” he wrote.
Montgomery’s work was included in “Looking at You,” a group exhibition that ran from June 5 through Aug. 1 at the museum.
