COURTHOUSE
William Irvine, “Woman In A Yellow Coat.”

Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth is presenting “Form Meets Surface,” an exhibition highlighting porcelain ceramics by potter Mark Bell and collaborative works created with painter William Irvine.

The artists, both established in their respective fields, have worked together since 2015 to create porcelain vases and plates that combine Bell’s ceramic forms with Irvine’s painted imagery.

Porcelain presents unusual technical and creative challenges because of its smooth, nonporous surface and the unpredictable results of high-temperature firing. Their collaboration explores the relationship between ceramic form and painted surface.

The exhibition also features a collection of Irvine’s small white-house paintings and Bell’s wheel-thrown porcelain pottery, distinguished by his rich glazes.

Bell’s work has been featured at the Smithsonian Craft Show, the Portland Museum of Art and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. His work is also represented in the permanent collections of the Currier Museum of Art and the Crocker Art Museum.

The exhibition opened Oct. 14 with a gallery talk by the two artists and will remain on view through Nov. 21.
