Everything Wonderment – an installation by Artists-in-Residence, Duke & Battersby

For their exhibition here in Castine, they will be reprising their work Everything Wonderment after its debut in Brussels this spring. On a table in the space we find a microscope enabling the close inspection of various objects and organisms – bones, mosses, crystals, bacteria. In relation to this there are a series of sculptures: dioramas composed of geological crystals, minerals, and small animal remains such as whiskers, bones or feathers. As they have done with earlier works, in Everything Wonderment, the artists draw parallels between human society and the animal kingdom.

About the Artists:
Cooper Battersby (b. 1971, Penticton British Columbia, Canada) and Emily Vey Duke (b. 1972, Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada) have been working collaboratively since June 1994. They work in installation, new media, curation and criticism, but their primary practice is in art video.
Their work has been exhibited in galleries and at festivals in North and South America, Asia and throughout Europe, including the Whitney Museum (New York), Walker Center (Minneapolis), The Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), The Vancouver Art Gallery (Vancouver), The Renaissance Society (Chicago), The New York Video Festival (NYC), Oberhausen, The European Media Arts Festival (Osnabruck), Impakt (Utrecht), The Images Festival (Toronto), The Musee d’Art Contemporain (Montreal), DUMBO (Brooklyn), and the International Film Festival of Rotterdam.
Duke and Battersby are tenured professors in the Transmedia Department in Syracuse, New York.
In 2012, a book about their work was published by Coachhouse Press. It is called The Beauty Is Relentless. In 2015, a book of Duke’s writing was published called The Illuminations Project.
