The Annual Black and White Show opens at CRAFT Gallery
The annual “Black and White” show at CRAFT Gallery explores limiting the artist’s palette to black and white in order to focus on form, texture, design and proportion. Portland artist Marjorie Moore, new to CRAFT, exhibits her drawings from her Drought, Fire and Ash series, vividly portraying the devastation caused by wildfires that transform the landscape into ethereal beauty devoid of color. These and handwoven tapestries and pillows, raku and porcelain pottery, hand blown glass, paintings and drawings, woodcuts, thread drawings and shibori silk scarves and shawls are all brought together in dialogue with one another at CRAFT. Artists Autumn Cipala, Morris Dorenfeld, Sara Hotchkiss, Lissa Hunter, David Jacobson, Daphne Taylor, Suzi Van Wye and Dudley Zopp are among the artists in this show who use mixed media and traditional craft materials to explore working in black and white. The show continues through September.
In a first ever project, CRAFT has partnered with Eco-Art Ventures to offer exclusive visits in October to CRAFT Gallery artists’ studios to observe them at work and to engage in conversation regarding their craft.. The full day experience will visit three different studios on each of four Tuesdays in October. The groups will be small, traveling together in a van on country roads at the height of the autumn colors. Please call Lolly Mitchell at 207 593 8688 for details and registration or stop by CRAFT Gallery for more information and a full schedule.
CRAFT will be open on the First Friday Art Walk evening on September 7th. Meaghan Clark, a young emerging musician and singer will perform country music in the courtyard at 12 Elm Street. FMI please call 207 594 0167 and visit www.craftonelm
