James Fitzgerald, “Gulls Over Manana,” watercolor, 24 ½” x 19 ½”

The Wiscasset Bay Gallery is hosting a reception on Saturday, May 25th from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. to celebrate the gallery’s 35th year and the opening of  “Spring Arrivals.”  The reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Highlighting this show is a dynamic watercolor by James Fitzgerald (American, 1899-1971) titled “Gulls Over Manana.” Depicting a soaring flock of seagulls at sunset on Monhegan Island, the work is unique in its vibrant energy and almost calligraphic brushwork. On the reverse side of this double-sided work is a herd of horses painted with equal vigor.

Many new works by contemporary New England artists are featured in the exhibition including “Rhododendron,” a thickly painted oil on panel in spring greens and deep blues by Keith Oehmig. Judith Magyar’s enigmatic landscapes and David Kasman’s rich, impasto oils are also on display. Other featured artists are Roberta Goschke, Michael Graves, Guy Corriero, Paul Niemiec, David Lussier and Diana Johnson.

In keeping with the diversity of this annual spring show, the Wiscasset Bay Gallery has included many European works with Paris street scenes by Genevieve Gallibert (1888-1978), André Picot (1910-1992), Francois Gall (1912-1987) as well as a view of Venice by Guiseppe Marino (1916-1975).
