Who would ever imagine that you could have a beautiful scarf that is warm in winter, cool in summer and environmentally friendly? Now featured at Stable Gallery in Damariscotta, Amy Smith’s woven scarves do it all.
As a handweaver, Amy weaves all year long in Tencel yarn. Made from wood pulp, the yarn has a low environmental impact ands come with beautiful luster and drape. The resulting scarves are soft to snuggle in the cold, light and flowing in summer’s heat. Amy Smith is one of the nine, featured artists for this month’s show at the Stable Gallery.
When the artist members put up each month’s show at the gallery, they enjoy finding synergies among the various artists’ works. Similarities could be in the colors, shapes or rhythms of the pieces. The show is a woven work of art in itself.
Cynthia Marsden, glass artist, comments, “The straight and curved lines of Bernadette de Cesare’s pastels complement the swoops and edges of my wave sculptures.”
“I’m enjoying seeing my handwovens in the context of so much great local art, exclaims Amy Smith.” “Pamela Hansen’s paintings share a color palette, tucking in the same turquoise and magenta highlights.”
In another place, the brilliant red and yellows in Priscilla McCandless’s oil paintings highlight the yellow and red dishes of Cynthia Marsden nearby.
Two customers recently reflected on the joy of seeing multiple works complement each other, “The whole is better than the parts. We only wish we could buy the works in this whole area.”
It’s a great show – well, another great show – at Stable Gallery.
Stable Gallery is open daily 10-5 at 28 Water Street, one block from the main street of Damariscotta with ample parking. For more information, call the gallery at 563-1991 or visit the gallery’s website, www.stablegallerymaine.com.
