During these strange and unprecedented days, everything feels on edge. At times overwhelmed with world news and extraordinary challenges facing family and friends, the very act of painting, for me, has served as a lifeline. The root influences informing my paintings, namely the ingenious cycles of the natural world and our relationship within it, remain as profound as ever. The starts to my current series of work, The Everyday, were/are at times gestural and spare and alternately dense and layered. Some have remained this way, finished in the their nebulous movement. Others find more concise form and imagery. Flowers particularly seem to want to be the last to speak. Initially I thought to disregard their power, as if flowers and light presenting themselves through my hands and marks, in this time, was not enough. Yet when I allow myself to center, I realize, this is the real work. To trust the resurgence of hope that finds its way through the layers that have come before.
With gratitude for the privilege and ability to create, these last few months have seen a flurry of production. Galleries have stretched to do what they can to support artists. As well as current exhibition preparations, I recently compiled a selection of fictional short stories for a chapbook contest, and submitted video work for a different contest, incorporating various art forms with poetry. I’m excited to share a link for viewing this project in the near future! The following is a list of places where my work is presently or soon to be featured, both in person and virtually.
