The Harlow invites artists to submit artwork to “art + gender,” a juried exhibition that explores the relationship between gender and society. “Art + gender” will be on view Aug. 6 to Sept. 11 at 100 Water St. in Hallowell with an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 6. “Art + Gender” is open to all New England-based artists. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. July 1.

The Harlow is celebrating artists whose work explores and engages with gender issues, gender identity and gender equity in the art world. Artwork that employs a wide range of approaches will be chosen. The criteria for participation in this show are that you were in a group that has been historically excluded from showing art, or your art addresses the issues of those that have been left out. The show will include work that addresses the broader social and political questions and contexts that intersect with gender identity. 

Harlow’s primary interest is not just in this as subject but in showing work that gives visibility to artists of all genders, including men, women, transgender people, LGBTQ people, those with intersecting identities who do not express gender as subject but who have been ignored by the art world and in particular in Maine. Gender nonconforming communities see their existence debated by politicians; Harlow wants to see these artists take back the narrative.

The show will be curated by Susan Leslie Maasch. Maasch studied art history and started exhibiting art in New Haven Connecticut in 1988. She owned two galleries in Maine, with a range of contemporary art, from 1996 through 2016. Maasch is the founder of the Trans Youth Equality Foundation, established in 2007. Her office is in Portland.

Original fine art in any media may be submitted, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, digital, printmaking, fiber, photography, mixed media, ceramics and installation. Each artist may submit up to three works of art, which must be the artist’s own original work created within the last three years. Art that has been previously exhibited at the Harlow is not eligible. All works entered must be original work by the submitting artist. Giclees and other reproductions are not eligible.

July 1: Complete entries due by 11:59 p.m. Digital images, entry form and fee must be received on or before this date for preliminary judging. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

July 11: Preliminary screening complete and notification of results emailed to artists by this date.

Aug. 6: Opening reception in conjunction with Hallowell Pride
