“Mystic Blue,” by Olga Merrill.

For its final show of the season, the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset features four fine art photographers, each celebrating Maine through their own point of view and aesthetic.

Works by Terry Hire, Jim Nickelson, Lisa Mossel Vietze and Olga Merrill explore Maine through both abstract and representational imagery, all with a unique take on aspects of our local surroundings.

The show opened with a reception on Sept. 25 and runs through Oct. 16.

This show, originally conceived by Lisa Mossel Vietze for the Archipelago Gallery in Rockland, has been reimagined for the Maine Art Gallery with new works and nearly the same roster of artists. Each artist brings a particular point of view and presents us with rich details we often miss in the typical photographic representations of Maine.

Terry Hire, who passed away in early 2020, was a designer and gardener who focused his photography on the abandoned man-made environment.

Olga Merrill’s seascape images have an almost meditatively slow feel of a mysterious, painted picture.

Lisa Mossell Vietze is drawn to botanicals for their color, vibrations, form and vitality. She finds beauty in smaller landscapes, like that in a flower.

“Pyrotechnic #185,” by Jim Nickelson.

Jim Nickelson uses photography to grapple with the unknown and our relationship to the Universe. His inquiry is wide ranging, delving into the realm of science and cosmology.

“Our Maine” is sponsored by Bob Bond of 40 Federal Street Studio. Season Sponsor for the Maine Art Gallery is Sherri Dunbar of Tim Dunham Realty.

The Maine Art Gallery is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement and preservation of painting, sculpture and graphic arts through exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, and educational programs for children and adults. The gallery is located at 15 Warren St., Wiscasset. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
