“Stubble” by Ben Potter.

Cynthia Winings Gallery will start its new season with the group exhibition “Interstice,” featuring the work of Edwige Charlot, Elizabeth Gourlay and Ben Potter.

New artworks from Ingrid Ellison, Robin Reynolds, Lari Washburn, Patricia Wheeler, Cynthia Winings, Diane Bowie Zaitlin and others will also be exhibited.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. May 28.

The exhibition explores the concept of liminal spaces and the idea of in-betweenness. Each artist offers a unique perspective on the theme while sharing a common interest in exploring the space between different ideas and concepts.

Charlot, Potter and Gourlay will present works that reveal the dynamic nature of the interstitial space. Charlot’s mixed-media collages fuse elements of African, Caribbean, and European art and culture, creating a unique fusion that blurs the boundaries between different traditions. Potter’s paintings exist in a liminal space between the everyday and the extraordinary, abstraction and representation, transforming found photographs and stencils into unexpected shapes and configurations of positive and negative space. Gourlay’s abstract paintings explore the interstices between color, form, and space, creating a sense of balance, harmony, and tension within the composition.

Taken together, the artworks offer a rich exploration of the idea of interstice, inviting us to explore and interpret this liminal space and embrace the complexity of the spaces in between.
