UMVA free visits to prominent artists’ studios,

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Union of Maine Visual Artists is launching a free series of visits for UMVA members to prominent artists’ studios, beginning with painters Linden Frederick and Maxwell Nolin in Belfast on Saturday, July 13, from 1:00 to 3:30.

Participants will have an informal exchange with these remarkable landscape and portrait “realists,” respectively, and see how they approach their craft in their work spaces. An August visit is planned for the studios of Katherine Bradford, Emilie Stark-Menneg, John Bisbee, Pam Smith and Michel Droge in Brunswick, and a studio visit in September to Alan Magee in Cushing. Linden Frederick is a realist painter whose work focuses on small-town American life, and almost always at dusk or night. He has had 22 one-person shows and been included in 35 group shows over the past 35 years. He says, “I’m not interested in telling a story in my paintings, but there is definitely a narrative element, and room for viewers to bring to it their own experiences.”

“Color theory is the foundation of my painting process and I use limited palettes and color triads. Harmony and discord together are especially important in paintings set at dusk or night.”

Maxwell Nolin is a dedicated portrait artist who deeply values the essence of every individual. With a genuine desire to capture the true essence of his subjects, his goal is to transcend the superficial and convey their unique personality and spirit in every portrait he creates. His artistic journey has taken him to places like Florence, Italy, where he studied classical painting at The Florence Academy of Art, and he has received private instruction and mentoring from renowned artists. Maxwell’s work has been exhibited in various galleries throughout the country and he has received awards and recognition for his talent, including the “Select 50” award in the 2023 International Portrait Competition by The Portrait Society of America.  He approaches his studio practice with discipline, showing up with focus and gratitude every day. Maxwell currently works out of his studio in Belfast, Maine.
