Courthouse Gallery Fine Art presents the show “Sol Invictus: The Return of Light” from Dec. 3 to Jan. 10, celebrating the winter solstice through visual art and poetry.
Sol Invictus was a Roman sun god whose name translates to “Unconquered Sun.” In ancient times, the winter solstice marked the end of a mythical struggle between dark and light forces. On the longest night of the year, the idea of an “unconquered sun” is compelling and evocative. Twenty-five artists and twelve poets will present their interpretations of this theme.
An Artist Reception & Poetry Reading will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 21, with the poetry portion beginning at 5 p.m.

Participating artists include Janice Anthony, Siri Beckman, Jeffery Becton, Lise Bécu, Judy Belasco, Ragna Bruno, Tom Curry, Heidi Daub, Gregory Dunham, Kate Emlen, Philip Frey, Rick Fox, June Grey, William Irvine, Philip Koch, Sarah LaFontaine, Frederica Marshall, Holly Meade (1956–2013), Rosie Moore, Emily Muir (1904-2013), Linda Packard, Alison Rector, Caroline Sulzer, Lilian Day Thorpe and Katherine Wilkes.
Participating poets include Hollie Adams, William Carpenter, Heidi Daub, Kate Emlen, Beatrix Gates, William Irvine, Annaliese Jakimides, Carl Little, Stuart Kestenbaum, Frederica Marshall, Weslea Sidon, Emily Blair Stribling and Caroline Sulzer.

Also new from the gallery, the Siri Beckman Artist Talk held at Courthouse Gallery on May 22, in conjunction with a solo exhibition that highlighted Siri Beckman prints from her collection of linocuts and wood engravings, is now available for viewing online on YouTube.
This past spring, a book featuring more than 100 of Siri Beckman’s enchanting prints was released called “The Prints of Siri Beckman: Engraving a Sense of Place” (Down East Books) and can be ordered online.
Siri Beckman’s wood engraving make wonderful gifts for the holidays.
