A double exhibition now on view at the Kittery Art Association invites visitors to contemplate their connection to the natural world — and perhaps rethink their own role in it. “Earth Awakening” and “Reduce Reuse Recycle,” two intertwined shows running through May 11 at the gallery offer a powerful, visual celebration of the environment through works made with sustainable or repurposed materials, and pieces that draw inspiration from the planet’s beauty.
An opening reception was held from 5 to 7 p.m. April 27. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
This annual exhibition calls attention to the transformative role of art in promoting environmental awareness. Whether through abstract reflection or direct use of recycled materials, the artists explore ecological fragility with a sense of reverence and curiosity. The show prompts viewers to consider: How might I reimagine my relationship with the earth? What choices can I make to reduce harm and support sustainability in my daily life?
Also on view is a selection of work by spotlight artist Margaret Dwyer, a Vermont-based watercolorist whose vivid, layered paintings often explore psychological and dreamlike themes. With an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Dwyer frequently draws on ideas around the unconscious, trauma and transformation in her work. A passionate educator, she teaches widely throughout New England and has been featured in both national and international juried shows as well as fine art publications. “Opening the world of watercolor to people has been and continues to be a purposeful mission for me,” she says. “Ideas and artistic methods are constantly in motion in my studio, and it is a joy to share that with others.” Learn more about her work at margaretdwyerart.com.
