The upcoming “Elemental” exhibition at Archipelago demonstrates how Maine’s artistic community continues to find fresh approaches to the state’s most enduring themes. Opening June 6 during Rockland’s First Friday Art Walk, the show features works that either draw inspiration from or utilize techniques related to the classical elements.

This conceptual framework allows for remarkable diversity within a cohesive theme. The participating artists — including Jane Banquer, Holly Berry, Andre Benoit, Pam Cabanas, Terry Golson, Lee Gordon, Emily Bell-Hoerth, Clint Jones, Richard MacDonald, Robin Rier, Susan Sidwell, Christina Vincent, Shannon Westphal, Sarah Wilde and Ben Williamson — work across mediums from photography and steel to large papercuts and sgraffito.

The exhibition’s strength lies in its ability to showcase both established and emerging voices within Maine’s artistic ecosystem. Archipelago’s role as both store and gallery creates an interesting dynamic where visitors can experience serious artistic work alongside more accessible pieces, breaking down artificial barriers between “fine art” and craft traditions.

The opening reception, 5 to 7 p.m. June 6, offers an opportunity to meet the artists and participate in Rockland’s monthly celebration of local creativity.

Archipelago is located at 386 Main Street, Rockland. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
