The Turtle Gallery celebrates the profound presence of trees in art. The first exhibition opened May 30 with an open house and discussion. The show features two distinct artistic voices: painter Erik Meijer and sculptor Eugene Koch.

Also on view are works in various media by other gallery artists.

Meijer employs the traditional medium of oil on canvas to capture the essence of trees within his broader exploration of light and landscape on Deer Isle. His work is influenced by Dutch masters but with a contemporary twist.

Koch’s sculptures celebrate the natural degradation of tree trunks through the integration of line and intricate patterns left by insects thus creating unique compelling artistic expressions.

Through paint and wood, both artists offer compelling interpretations of the tree’s form, surface and inherent beauty.

Turtle Gallery resides in an 1876 two-story barn and outdoor sculpture garden located at 61 N. Deer Isle Road in Deer Isle. For more information, visit turtlegallery.com, or call 207-348-9977.
