MARS HALL Leo and me
“Sunset Monhegan II” by Leo Brooks.

Mars Hall Gallery opens its doors for a show titled “Leo & Me Revisited” on July 18. The show celebrates the art and friendship of two artists, Leo Brooks and Elaine Reed, who met on Monhegan Island in the early ’80s. They shared their painting experience not only on Monhegan but also in the Bronx, New York, and New Jersey for 12 years until 1993 when Brooks died.

A reception for the artists will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 18.

While each has their own unique style, they shared the love of the natural environment around them. Brooks’ focus was on color, shapes and the energy of the Island, while Reed’s work captures the light and shadows, serenity and sense of moment.

Brooks didn’t start painting till he was 60 and retiring from The New York Times. Reed has been creating art for over 50 years, has taught and is currently volunteering at Spindle Works in Brunswick. She is also a member of WAMI, Woman Artists of Monhegan Island. Her new work for the show comes from the Japanese word “Komorebi.” It speaks to the dappled light as sunlight filters through the trees and the feeling one experiences in such an environment. The Brooks work is from four collections with unframed work also available.

In the main gallery a group show features an eclectic mix of paintings by watercolorists Nat Lewis, Cam Noel, Carl Sublett and Bill Thon; acrylic and oil paintings by Jeannette Steele Esposito, Kris Johnson, Constance Kiermaier, Sharon Larkin, Nancy Lovely, Maurice Michel Lode, Elaine Niemi, Manuel Rincon, Carl Sublett, Ron Weaver, Georgia Zaychenko, James Zoller and Eleanor Zuccola; and mixed media collage by Constance Kiermaier, Roderick Slater, Peter Stanziale and Eleanor Zuccola.

The gallery also offers a large variety of 3D outsider art by Ian Baird, Bill Cook, Bill Nichols, Elaine Niemi and Rudy Rotter; quality crafts including decoupage by Davene Fahy and stained glass, pottery and mosaics by Dona Bergen. On display in the gardens is “The Recycled Zoo” by Brian Read. Also available a large collection of antiques, vintage and silver jewelry, books and original 1960s and ‘70s rock posters.
