Caldbeck Gallery is pleased to present its August exhibitions, showcasing the work of Katherine Bradford, Anna Dibble, Melanie Essex, Dan Dowd, John Walker and Alan Bray. The exhibitions will open with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 1.
Katherine Bradford & Anna Dibble — Figures dive, float, and travel by boat, sometimes poised to leap, other times still in thought. Nearby, lone houses and untamed landscapes set the stage—bodies of water, shifting skies, erratic weather, and luminous blues. These scenes feel familiar yet apart from our world. Their vivid colors invite us in, then trick us into looking deeper, sparking curiosity and wonder.
Melanie Essex, “Heavy Weather” — Essex explores how we can be immersed—wholly and ecstatically—in our environments. Created over the past year, these works reflect turbulent news cycles and intensifying weather, yet remain rooted in atmospheric beauty. Built from washes of color, reworked canvases, and layered detail, each painting invites the viewer to pause, breathe, and find calm within the storm.
Dan Dowd, “What’s Going On?” — Dowd transforms discarded materials—worn clothing, tire rubber—into works that speak to labor, consumption, and renewal. These objects carry the history of the bodies and craftspeople who shaped them. Through intuitive combinations, Dowd reimagines what we leave behind, extending the life of each object and offering a contemplative vision of reuse, class, and environmental care.
John Walker — John Walker continues his dynamic explorations of paint and mark-making, with bold compositions that pulse with color and gesture.
Alan Bray, “Summer Selects” — Alan Bray, in Summer Selects, captures the Maine landscape in meticulously rendered scenes, where pattern and light reveal the quiet magic of seasonal change.
The exhibitions will be on view throughout August, highlighting diverse and dynamic works ranging from painting to sculpture, each bringing unique perspectives and explorations of form, texture and color.
