Bayview Gallery presents “Call of the Mountains, Cry of the Sea,” featuring new work by Marsha Donahue of Belfast and Scott Moore of Stockton Springs. The show opens Sept. 12 with an artist talk at 4 p.m., followed by a reception to meet the artists from 5 to 7 p.m.
Donahue and Moore have been exploring Maine for much of their painting lives, seeking out subjects that speak to them in a way that compels them to set brush to canvas. Both painters find their muse on the coast and inland, setting up their easels by woodland streams, next to harbors, around mountains.
Donahue, who lived for many years in Millinocket, might be called the painter laureate of Mount Katahdin, having devoted herself to that region for decades. Moore’s “painterly realism” features filtered light and modernist color.
In an appreciation written for the show, art critic and author Carl Little celebrates their sense of place. “Donahue and Moore are true intimates of the landscape,” he writes, “and share with us their visions of a world at once familiar and newly enticing.”

This show of choice canvases by both painters invites one to consider variations on themes. Compare Donahue’s brightly colored, kaleidoscopic Cool Stream Bed with Moore’s rich and dark Autumn Stream: they both capture the special nature of flowing water, the “turbulence and impetuosity” of the stream that the Hudson River School painter Thomas Cole celebrated.
Donahue and Moore also turn their attention to coastal dwellings. The former’s study of a house in Corea offers a quintessential Downeast structure and its reflection in evening light. Meanwhile, Moore takes on one of Maine’s most iconic villages, Stonington, capturing that wonderful assortment of buildings that range across its waterfront.
