MEETINGHOUSE
“The Alchemy of Love and Anger” by Amy Kustra.

Meetinghouse Arts will present “Abstraction in Maine Landscape Painting: A Slide Talk with Philip Frey & Carl Little” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10. General admission is $15, and doors open at 5 p.m.

Artist Philip Frey and art critic Carl Little will present a lively slide talk about abstraction in Maine landscape painting. Frey will discuss how he approaches and uses abstraction in his own work, as well as the inspiration he draws from. Little will explore how other Maine-connected artists, both historical and contemporary, use abstraction in their landscape painting. There will be time for an audience Q&A.

Frey and Little have known each other for decades, first meeting after Little wrote a review of Frey’s work in the Maine Times in 1994. Their shared history promises an insightful, vibrant and familiar discussion.

Stay after the talk for a reception in the gallery with light refreshments and a viewing of the first juried abstract show, “Perceptions.”

Meetinghouse Arts offers its first abstract show featuring 31 artists working in oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, stoneware, encaustic, assemblage and photography. The exhibition highlights a range of approaches to abstraction and invites artists to consider how their work contributes to this ongoing visual dialogue.

The “Perceptions” show was juried by Jenny McGee Dougherty, a visual artist and surface designer based in South Portland. She earned her BFA in printmaking from Maine College of Art in 2005 and has since developed a multifaceted practice that spans painting, textiles, murals and surface design. Her work explores abstraction through a deep engagement with place and process.

Meetinghouse Arts Gallery is at 40 Main St., Freeport. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and by appointment. See meetinghousearts.org, or call 207-865-0040 for more information.
